前原冬樹《一刻》スルメに茶碗

前原はとことん一木であることにこだわる。スルメ本体はもちろん、それを挟む木のクリップと金属のチェーンも全て一木から彫り出されている。パーツを組み合わせているのでない。一本の角材を切って、彫って、削って、成形して、彩色する。すべてマイナスの作業である。よほど明確な完成作のビジョンがなければ、このような造形は成立しない。

Mr. Maehara is particular about being a single tree. The dried squid itself, as well as the wooden clip and metal chain that hold it in place, are all carved from a single piece of wood. It's not a combination of parts. Cut, carve, shave, shape, and color a single square piece of wood. It's a subtractive work. Without a very clear vision of the finished product, this type of modeling would not be possible.
